Sometimes I guess it would be nice to have sisters who have to be there for you all the time, but at the same time I wouldn't like to be one of those sisters who have to be there for someone that I may not actually like. I think the people who are Greek find real value in it and found a group with whom they fit in, and that's the whole point. I just happened to find the group with whom I fit in outside of Greek organizations. My best friends and some of my close friends are Greek, and we've stayed as close as ever, so I amAnd I think it's more valuable to just be friends with the people who just want to be your friends because they like you, not because they're your sister.
This past weekend was sorority pick up here at Westminster. I am not Greek, and therefore was only a spectator to everything that went down. (Also, we independents were allowed to drink alcohol this weekend, while sororities were obliged to their sisters all weekend.) I spent a lot of time with the other independents on campus this weekend, and I really enjoyed it. There is something to be said for being friends with only those who you actually choose to be friends with. Independents on this campus are greatly out numbered by our friends in fraternities and sororities, and sometimes Greeks are not always very nice about independents uniting to do anything. For example, every fall there is an independent candidate for Homecoming King and Queen, mostly just to be fair, as far as I'm concerned. Greek organizations have the advantage of unity: each candidate has about 40 guarunteed votes from their sisters or brothers. Independent voters are usually then divided amongst the Greek candidates according to whom they are close to. My junior year, when one of my closest friends ran for Queen as an independent, independents united around her and put together a pretty good campaign. She won, and an independent female hadn't one anything on this campus in years. Some people were not happy. But we continue to do this as independents, but really more because we are all friends who are all not in sororities and fraternities.

Back at Westminster for the last time around. No class today as it is Wednesday and I only scheduled classes on Tuesday and Thursday. Should be a fab semester with lots of free time, especially since last semester I had almost no free time. Only three classes (one communications, one PR and one poli sci) to worry about this semester and a few hours at my works tudy job. The rest of the time will be spent searchinig, searching, searching for whatever I can do after graduation. Sitting at lunch today, I realized how few people at Westminster I actually enjoy spending time with...I guess that means it's time to graduate. Contemplated becoming a hermit. Best friend vetoed that idea, however.
Well. Here it is. I'm halfway through my last winter break ever. No longer will I have 5 weeks over the Christmas holiday to just loaf around and relax. Time to look for a real job. I'm working on it. I've applied to a few places in Washington, DC and I'm going to start looking in Pittsburgh soon. We'll see how it goes. I was supposed to be driving to DC tomorrow morning to interview for an internship at the Woodrow Wilson Center, but Lake Erie decided to drop some lake effect snow on all of western PA, so no epic return to the district for this kid. Oh well. Here's to the future.
