Another book that I'm really looking forward to is Dead End Gene Pool by Wendy Burden, part of the great Eastern family, the Vanderbilts. She examines the not-so-glamorous side of her family tree. As I start this new lead in my blog, I think I'm going to look a little more closely at memoirs of the less-conspicuous lives among us. Turns out, it's not only the celebrities who have lives worth reading.
You'll find a really long lapse since my last post. A few reasons: first, nothing much happens to me on a daily basis, and I don't see the purpose of writing about every little thing that I do on a daily basis (i.e., no one cares about what I ate for lunch today). Second, I've been busy with school and trying to do something with my life. Third, I needed to decide on something real to blog about and actually have a reason to write, besides what I had for lunch today. So, I decided to write about reading. I like to read and don't get much of a chance to have good discussion of the things that I'm reading, so why not just put it all out in cyberspace so everyone can know what I think. Sounds perfect to me. So here we are. I've always been a big fan of ELLE magazine for all of the great fashion photography. But I've really started reading more closely the more substantial features of the mag, and have gained a whole new respect. The ELLEIntelligence section offers insightful opinions and reviews on books, music and movies, many of which don't get the attention of other mainstream media outlets. So now that I've made a decision about this blog, I will go, armed with a list of new authors, to Barnes and Noble, my very favorite book chain store, and explore a new literary frontier. ELLE had a great feature on British author, Rachel Cusk, who has apparently been stirring up the literary world in the last few years. She wrote a book with an honest, yet controversial look at the struggles of her first years as a mother, as well as some difficult to read novels about family. She sounds like a fascinating woman and her work sounds equally as fascinating, so she will be on my list of new reads. I am thinking of starting with one of her novels, Arlington Park.
